Smaller, sharper, more usable

Plunge pools, cocktail pools and compact lap pools are replacing the sprawling free-form shapes of past decades. On typical Vallejo and American Canyon lots, a smaller pool leaves room for seating, shade and planting — and the whole yard gets used.

Less water also means less to heat, less to treat and less to evaporate, which matters in a dry-summer climate.

Finishes and materials

Dark pebble and quartz finishes remain popular for their deep, natural water color and solar gain on shoulder-season days. Large-format porcelain and poured concrete decks have largely replaced stamped patterns.

One practical note: dark finishes show scale and calcium deposits more readily than light plaster, so hard North Bay water makes balanced chemistry more visible, not less important.

Efficiency is now the default

Variable-speed pumps are standard on new builds and the single best upgrade for an older pool — running longer at low speed filters better and uses a fraction of the electricity.

Cartridge filters, high-efficiency and heat-pump heaters, LED lighting and automatic covers round out the list. Covers do double duty here, cutting both evaporation and heating cost.

Smart control, with a caveat

App-controlled automation lets you adjust temperature, lighting and schedules from anywhere, and it is genuinely useful. What it does not do is test water, brush walls or clean a filter.

Automation makes good maintenance easier to execute. It does not replace the hands-on part of keeping a pool healthy.
